The Goodridges and 26 Upper St James Street

Page 1 of the Probate copy of John Goodridge's will.

In July 1872 John Goodridge bought the Fixtures, Fittings and Goodwill of the butcher's business that was trading at 26 Upper St James Street from Absolum Strong. The collection of family documents that his son passed on to his children includes the receipt for the £100 that was paid to complete the purchase.

The first Electoral Roll that John Goodridge appeared in was 1873. The 1881 Roll records that John Goodridge had second qualifying property, a building, 39a Crescent Cottages. This property qualification continued until the reform of 1918 when Emma Goodridge gained the vote.

His will was dated 18th June 1913 and Probate was granted to  his executors on 11th September 1923. It indicates that he left the goodwill of his butcher's business along with the fixtures and fittings and the lease on 26 Upper St James Street to his son John Povey Goodridge. It is not yet know when the Freehold for the premises was purchased, but by the time that the business was sold in 1928 it had become his property.
